Q: Why is practicing compassion important to you?
A: I think the ability to feel and convey compassion is what makes us human, and that it is the most rewarding thing to practice. I truly believe that mankind tend towards compassion, not cruelty, and that it is one of the most undeniable emotions.
Q: Your favorite place to be in nature?
A: Rottnest Island, off the coast of Perth. I spent the majority of my childhood there, and it really is a special place for me.
Q: How has being vegan influenced you?
A: I feel like it has made me a more balanced person. I am calmer and more open to other people’s emotions.
Q: What are some experiences you’ve had as a practicing vegan in the fashion industry?
A: I feel like becoming a vegan is becoming more mainstream, and subsequently the fashion industry is embracing it. There are many more fantastic designers now who are cruelty-free. Personally, I refuse to wear fur on my jobs, and everyone has been very respectful and curious about my stance. I feel honored to be the first vegan model to walk the Victoria’s Secret runway also; that was a cool experience!
Q: What is a piece of advice you have for someone considering becoming vegan?
A: Do your homework. Make sure you hit all your nutritional requirements; you can’t help others if you aren’t operating to the best of your ability. Make the most of all the amazing information out there and get cooking! Don’t rely on vegan fast food.
Q: What is your favorite ingredient in a vegan meal?
A: Tomatoes. I eat a huge amount of them, either cherry tomatoes as snacks or in pasta sauce. I’m obsessed!
